Garbage & Recycling

Important Changes to Garbage & Recycling Collection in Hartland

The Municipality of Hartland, in partnership with the Western New Brunswick Service Commission, is introducing a new automated wheeled bin collection system beginning in September 2026. This change will improve safety, efficiency, and service for residents.

What's Changing?

New Wheeled Bins

Households and apartment buildings with four units or fewer will receive free wheeled bins for garbage collection. These bins are specifically designed for the new automated collection trucks.

Weekly Garbage Collection

Residents will now receive weekly garbage collection.

Increased Recycling Collection

Recycling collection will occur on an alternating weekly schedule, providing at least two recycling collections each month, and three in some months.

Automated Collection System

New collection vehicles will use a robotic arm to lift and empty bins. This improves worker safety and collection efficiency.

What Residents Need to Know

Only Approved Bins Will Be Collected

Beginning in September 2026, waste presented in wooden boxes or any container other than the issued municipal bins will not be collected.

Garbage Must Be Bagged

All garbage placed in the black bin must be bagged.

Recycling Must Be Loose

Recyclables should be placed loose in the blue recycling bin. Shredded paper should be placed in a paper bag or cereal box.

Proper Bin Placement

To ensure successful collection:

  • Place bins at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day or the evening before.
  • Keep bins on level ground.
  • Ensure lids are fully closed.
  • Place bins at least 1 metre (2 feet) apart from each other and from parked vehicles or other obstacles.
  • Place bins no more than 2 metres (6 feet) from the roadside where there is no curb.

Items That Will Not Be Collected

The following materials remain prohibited:

  • Construction and demolition waste
  • Hazardous waste
  • Appliances containing freon (fridges, freezers, air conditioners, etc.)

Bulky Waste Collection Continues

The existing bulky waste collection program will continue for larger household items.

Collection Calendar

Residents should review the new collection calendar for their specific collection schedule and route. Collection days remain Tuesday or Thursday depending on your location.

Residents are encouraged to download the Recycle Coach app to receive collection reminders, access recycling information, and stay updated on service changes.
